My Practice

During my early and artistically untrained adulthood, I sought creative expression through several activities – clay sculpture, painting, theatrical costume design and upholstery. Eventually, I undertook a Fine Arts degree at Coventry University. There, I discovered the contemplative and tactile joy of ceramics whilst becoming increasingly concerned about environmental damage - the evidence of which I stumbled across with increasing frequency during the many walks I have been lucky enough to enjoy along the Atlantic coast of France.

More than twenty years on, my practice focuses on how collections can serve as a reference point linking our landscapes, the cultural rituals that have developed within them, and the contemporary climate crisis. Using the intrinsic fragility of ceramics, I seek to express the vulnerability of our natural world through single sculptures and series.

The core of my work addresses the catastrophic consequences of global warming, specifically the looming threat of rising sea levels and the resulting extinction of some of the world’s most valuable ecosystems. The lachrymatory (or tear bottle), traditionally used in the Roman period to collect tears from the bereaved, is my central metaphor.

I work primarily in porcelain, integrating man-made and natural debris gathered while beachcombing. These objects range from fossils to washed-up coral and artefacts, such as old ship-building nails – all created at remote moments in geological, ecological and human time.

For me, the shoreline is a kaleidoscope, where the tide – sometimes angry, sometimes gentle – throws up and lays down a token for quiet reflection about our roots.
