Amphorae 3
The lachrymatories in this work are made from stoneware clay and have been fired in a wood burning fast fire kiln, with a shino slip and glaze. Hung by hemp cord from a stainless steel hook. Each bottle contains an Atlantic Sea Fan Coral found on the shore after a storm.
These coral are normally anchored to a rock on the seabed, but can easily be dislodged by a strong storm. They are coloured orange to pink when they are alive, becoming bleached when they die. Slowly losing their exoskeleton skin composed of calcium carbonate which provides structural support and protection for the living polyps.
Dimensions L36cm, W 22cm, D 5cm - each individual bottle including the coral.
